🥧 Fife Businesses Shine at World Scotch Pie Awards

While Greggs might dominate the high streets, Scotland is home to many outstanding local bakeries, a fact proudly showcased at the annual World Championship Scotch Pie Awards. Held in Glasgow on May 10th, this year’s event saw 539 entries from 88 companies, making the judging tougher than ever.

James Pirie & Son, now part of McCaskies Butcher & Café in Wemyss Bay, claimed the top spot as Scotch Pie World Champion for a record-breaking sixth time, cementing their legendary status in Scottish baking. But it wasn’t just the big names grabbing the spotlight; Fife’s bakeries made an incredible showing, bringing home Bronze, Silver, Gold, and even Diamond awards. Here are the standout local winners:

LOCAL HEADLINES YOU NEED TO KNOW

• 🍽️ Booffi is set to open a new world buffet restaurant in Dunfermline next month, offering freshly cooked global cuisine every 30 minutes and creating around 30 jobs at the former Kinema ballroom site.

• ♻️ Frustration is growing in Dalgety Bay as no decision has been made on scrapping the recycling centre's booking system, with delays caused by an ongoing safety review.

• 🚴‍♂️ A 76-year-old Aberdour man, Don Morrison, is cycling from Land’s End to John O’Groats with a lifelong friend to raise money for dementia charity STAND, inspired by the support he received after his wife’s diagnosis.

• 🏆 Fife Voluntary Action has become the first employer in Fife, and one of only six in Scotland, to earn all three Living Wage Foundation accreditations: Living Wage, Living Hours, and Living Pension.

• 🏖️ The Aurrie café in Lower Largo, a popular coastal spot housed in a converted church, is now up for lease along with its nearby events venue, Aurrie Mor.

• 🏛️ A historic Cupar landmark that once housed Watts and Jordans nightclub is set for a major revival, with plans submitted to transform the 1814 building into a bar/restaurant, two retail units, and a coffee drive-thru.

• 🚰 Kirkcaldy's waterfront refill tap has helped save over 8,000 plastic bottles since its installation last October, contributing to Scottish Water’s national effort that’s now cut out 15 million single-use bottles across the country.

• 🌾 Plunkie Farm, near Glenrothes, aims to transform a storage container into a café and kids’ play zone, offering views of East Lomond and fresh farm produce.

• 🚨 That Place in the Bay, a community hub in Fife, has closed indefinitely amid a police probe into alleged managerial and financial misconduct. Former chairman Peter Collins denies the accusations, calling them “a pack of lies.”

• 🚖 James Glen and Linda Holt started with one cab during lockdown and now run St Andrews Taxis with 10 vehicles and 17 drivers.

🐚 From Sand to Seagrass: Help Shape Fife’s Shoreline

We’ve all been enjoying the great weather recently, and for many of us, that’s meant time well spent down at the beach. But if you’ve taken an early morning walk or scrolled through local social media, you’ll have seen the impact busy beach days can have: litter, damaged habitats, and more.

To help tackle this, Fife Communities Climate Action Network and Fife Climate Hub have teamed up with partners like The Ecology Centre, Marine Conservation Society, and Restoration Forth to launch a series of hands-on events this spring and summer. These sessions are a great way to get involved in local conservation efforts and help protect the amazing ecosystems along Fife’s coast. Check out the next three events below:

1. 🌱 Seagrass Spotter Session: Join The Ecology Centre and Restoration Forth to learn how to identify and log seagrass sightings using the Seagrass Spotter app. Your observations will contribute to important research and protection efforts.

2. 🧼 Beach Clean with the Marine Conservation Society: Help remove litter and record data that informs national campaigns to reduce marine pollution.

3. 🐚 Coastal Biodiversity Survey Training: Take your impact further by learning how to run coastal biodiversity surveys. This practical session includes oyster reef monitoring and intertidal species ID. Your findings will support future restoration work across the Firth of Forth.
