🤝 Fife Council Signs Up to the Buy Social Pledge

Fife Council has officially signed up to the Buy Social pledge, committing to support local social enterprises across the Kingdom. The motion, brought forward by councillors Kathleen Leslie and Altany Craik, received cross-party support and will now shape how the council spends its money going forward. The pledge focuses on five key areas:

• Fair work

• Commitment to Net Zero

• Procurement

• Prompt payment

• Positive impact (with an annual report on spending)

In short, the council will aim to include more local social enterprises in its procurement process, whether that’s for supplies, services, or contracts, giving socially-minded businesses a better shot at winning public work. The pledge is part of a wider campaign by Social Enterprise Scotland, which encourages councils and businesses to use their spending power for good.

• 🏥 Lochgelly’s long-promised new health centre may face a further seven-year delay, as the Scottish Government deprioritises funding, sparking frustration over broken promises and worsening conditions at the current site.

• ⛏️ Cowdenbeath Rotary Club has unveiled a new coal mining memorial in Brunton Square, honouring the town’s mining heritage as part of its centenary, with tributes from community leaders and a commemorative ceremony.

• 🏛️ The National Trust for Scotland has been ordered to replace modern roof tiles on a historic Culross building due to breaching listed building rules.

• 🏦 A new temporary banking hub has opened in Cowdenbeath, providing essential face-to-face banking services after local branch closures. A permanent site is coming soon.

• 🍺 Kirkcaldy’s Harbour Bar will pause regular operations after this weekend as owner Jon Stanley shifts focus to developing an on-site microbrewery, aiming to reopen the historic pub within 18–24 months.

• 🚫 Dozens of Dunfermline drivers have been hit with £100 warning notices ahead of Fife’s pavement parking ban starting September 1st.

• 🏟️ Fife College has unveiled the new Carnegie Conference and Events Centre, opening later this year at Dunfermline City Campus, with space for 1,000 delegates, modern amenities, and bookings already open.

🛒 Fifer in Running to Be Voice of Lidl Checkouts

Here’s one to make you smile, a Cupar local could soon be the new voice of Lidl’s Scottish self-checkouts! James D. is one of ten finalists in a national competition to find the Unexpected Scottish Voice in the Bagging Area, and he’s the only Fifer to make the cut. With the supermarket’s ever-growing presence in Scotland, including a few new stores planned for Fife, it’s clear they’re on the charm offensive.

Over 5,000 hopefuls auditioned earlier this year via Lidl’s travelling phone booth and WhatsApp hotline, all vying to bring a bit of Scottish humour and personality to tills across the country. The competition even caught the attention of actor Alan Cumming, who’s filmed a castle-set video giving his verdict on the finalists, and he’s calling on the public to cast their votes.
