TOP STORIES AROUND THE KINGDOM
βοΈ New Flight Paths Over Fife?

I was surprised this week to hear about Edinburgh Airportβs major plans for a complete shake-up of the flight paths used by planes on arrival and departure. This is always a controversial topic, with plenty of winners and losers depending on whose homes the planes end up flying over. And, with these new plans, it does look like Fife will see an impact.
Edinburgh Airport says the changes are necessary to modernise the way airspace is used, improving efficiency and reducing overall noise for more people. As part of the proposals, the airport has launched a public consultation, open until January 25th, 2026. A series of webinars (the first is on Monday) and local events are planned, and the airport has released a huge amount of documentation explaining the proposals.
That said, the consultation documents run to hundreds of pages and can be quite difficult to follow. After reviewing them, it appears that the key information for Fife residents comes down to a few maps showing the before-and-after flight paths for arrivals and departures.
Flight paths depend on which direction a plane takes off and lands, called Runway 24 and Runway 6, which is determined by the wind. Over the course of an average year, roughly 70% of flights use Runway 24, while about 30% use Runway 6. Currently, planes follow a relatively wide range of routes; under the new proposals, however, they are expected to fly more centrally within the ranges marked in the maps below.

Iβll continue to follow this story and keep you updated as it develops. In the meantime, you can take part in the consultation here, and if youβre curious, the noise simulation tool is worth checking out. It lets you choose the plane type and altitude to hear what it would sound like flying overhead.
Are you in favour of the changes? |
