βοΈ New Fife Walking Route to Honour Mining Heritage

A new project is aiming to create a long-distance walking and cycling route linking mining memorials across Fife, inspired by the success of the Fife Pilgrim Way. The Fife Miners' Memorial Way, led by the University of Stirling and backed by National Lottery Heritage Fund money, will map memorials, monuments, murals, and artworks that commemorate lives lost to mining and the communities shaped by the industry.
The idea came from former miner Iain Chalmers, who suggested it during a talk at Kirkcaldy Galleries linked to the Before and After Coal exhibition. Sites already identified include memorials in Valleyfield, Blairhall, Cowdenbeath, Cardenden, Kelty, Kirkcaldy, Dysart, East Wemyss, Lochore Meadows, and a mural in Comrie, plus a new stained-glass memorial in Kincardine marking the 40th anniversary of the 1984-85 miners' strike.
Richard Baker MP for Glenrothes and Mid Fife said it's "impossible to think about Fife without talking about our proud mining history," noting that even though the industry has fallen silent, the heritage "feels very much a part of our collective consciousness still."
The mapping phase continues until summer 2026, with locals encouraged to submit photographs, locations, and personal stories connected to memorials important to them or their community. The project will work with local walking and cycling groups to create the final connected route through Fife's former coalfield communities. Contributions can be made here.
