TODAYโ€™S TOP STORY

๐Ÿšด From Fife to Kenya's National Team

When St Andrews gym owner Dr Carrie Ruxton posted on Facebook offering her old tandem bike for free to anyone who could collect it from Cupar, she expected maybe a few local responses. What she didn't expect was a message from Kenya's national paracycling team. Alice Miring'u, a pilot cyclist who guides visually impaired athletes, had spotted the post and explained that suitable tandem bikes are almost impossible to find in Kenya, as they're not manufactured there and must be donated from abroad.

Despite the obvious logistical challenge of getting a bulky tandem bike from Fife to Nairobi, Carrie decided to make it happen. The bike had been used by her daughter Erin before she outgrew it, and Carrie loved the idea of it getting a second life helping Kenyan athletes compete internationally. Working with a Glasgow-based Kenyan who regularly sends containers back home, they arranged for the bike to be shipped as part of his next delivery.

After months of sorting out the logistics and wondering if it would actually make it, Carrie received a message last weekend confirming the bike had safely arrived in Nairobi on Valentine's Day. The timing was so perfect that Alice and her team have named the bike "Valentine." It's now being fitted with upgraded racing components and will be tested on the track later this year, potentially featuring in international competition. [BBC]

LOCAL HEADLINES YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • ๐Ÿ€ The University of St Andrews has teamed up with the R&A World Golf Museum to launch a new online lecture series exploring how sport has been portrayed in art from Ancient Greece to the modern day, running from March 4th to April 8th.

  • ๐Ÿก Plans for a new 60โ€‘bed luxury care home on the former New Park School playing fields in St Andrews have sparked local opposition. Residents say the Canongate meadow and woodland is a well-used green corridor with ecological value, while Morrison Community Care Group argues the facility is needed to meet demand from the townโ€™s above-average overโ€‘75 population.

  • ๐Ÿƒ Fife Sports and Leisure Trust will deliver a packed Easter holiday programme from April 6th to the 17th, featuring ยฃ1 Quid a Kid swimming, football and racquet sports for under-18s, plus affordable family sessions. See the full programme here.

  • ๐Ÿซ Fife Council has welcomed confirmation that Fife College will lead Scottish Government-funded skills and training support for workers affected by the Mossmorran plant closure. The programme will provide tailored upskilling and direct links to new jobs in engineering, energy and advanced manufacturing.

  • ๐Ÿš† ScotRail will introduce a ยฃ10 minimum fare from July 2026 for passengers who deliberately board without buying a ticket, following an education period from 1 April. Fare evasion costs Scotlandโ€™s Railway over ยฃ11m annually, with exemptions for certain passengers and circumstances.

  • ๐Ÿ’ Fife Flyers have received a cash injection from owners to stabilise the club after admitting it had been โ€œoperating beyond our means.โ€

  • ๐Ÿ™๏ธ The Dunfermline New City Assembly has concluded its work, with residents agreeing a set of recommendations to guide the cityโ€™s future growth and community improvements. The Assemblyโ€™s final report will be published in the coming weeks, and Fife Council will work with the public and partners to implement the agreed proposals.

  • ๐Ÿšข First Minister John Swinney has visited Babcockโ€™s Rosyth yard to see progress on the Royal Navyโ€™s Type 31 frigates. The programme supports advanced manufacturing, apprenticeships, and specialist engineering roles, contributing over ยฃ500 million annually to Scotlandโ€™s GDP and sustaining more than 10,500 UK jobs.

  • ๐Ÿšง Demolition of Kirkcaldy Esplanade car park is underway, but progress is taking longer than expected due to the postโ€‘tensioned concrete structure. Temporary supports are being installed on every level to ensure safe removal. Full demolition is planned by summer, with the entire site cleared by the end of 2026.

  • ๐Ÿ’ง Scottish Waterโ€™s ยฃ3.2โ€ฏmillion project to improve water quality at Ravenscraig Park in Kirkcaldy has been delayed, with work now set to start at the end of March 2026. The project will upgrade storm overflows to reduce sewer-related debris entering the Firth of Forth and the local beach. Completion is expected by late autumn 2026.
