🏥 NHS Fife's Rapid Cancer Service Helping Thousands

NHS Fife's Rapid Cancer Diagnostic Service (RCDS) is making a difference for patients with symptoms that don't fit standard referral routes.

Since launching in 2021, the service has accepted nearly 3,000 referrals and diagnosed 318 cancers. The service combines nurse-led assessment with consultant escalation for complex cases, giving patients a single, consistent point of contact throughout their diagnostic journey.

Over 43% of referrals have come from areas of multiple deprivation, with 72% of patients receiving their initial call, assessment and CT scan within 14 days of referral. Even when cancer is ruled out, 44% of those referrals received a new significant benign diagnosis, ensuring they still got timely support and onward care. [NHS Fife]

• 🤝 Fife Council’s Justice Social Work Service has delivered major improvements across North East Fife, with unpaid work supporting parks, play areas, community facilities, and more, contributing to over £710,000 of value across Fife in 2024/25.

• 🏋️‍♀️ St Andrews’ first women-only gym, Pink Health & Fitness, will open on January 5th after overcoming planning and cost challenges, creating a dedicated, supportive space aimed at improving women’s health and wellbeing.

• 🤱 NHS Fife and Fife Health and Social Care Partnership are strengthening local breastfeeding support as rates rise to 33.7% at six to eight weeks, with new peer groups, targeted support in deprived areas, and national recognition through UNICEF’s Baby Friendly Gold Award.

• 📷 The Fife Climate Forest photo competition showcased stunning images of trees and woodlands, with winners across primary, secondary and adult categories celebrating nature across the Kingdom.

• 🚴 Dunfermline has launched plans to install new cycle parking and repair stations to support active travel, reduce emissions and promote healthier, more sustainable transport across the city.

• 🎠 A new £100,000 play park has opened at Denfield Avenue in Cardenden, delivering inclusive, modern play equipment for children of all ages and abilities.

• 🏪 Kirkcaldy-based Greens Retail has been named in the UK’s top 100 fastest-growing founder-led businesses and is planning to expand with new store openings across Scotland after a strong 2025.
