TOP STORIES AROUND THE KINGDOM

⛴️ Is This The Final Barrier To The New Rosyth Ferry?

As we’ve been covering over the past few months, progress on the long-discussed Rosyth to Dunkirk ferry service has been steady. One of the biggest hurdles, the need for a separate freight border control post at Rosyth, appears to have been overcome thanks to the new UK-EU trade deal agreed earlier this year.

Graeme Downie, Labour MP for Dunfermline and Dollar, speaking after a meeting in London with Blair McDougall, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for Business and Trade, said the final barrier is securing funding to upgrade the Port of Rosyth. Talks are ongoing with the UK Government, Forth Ports, Fife Council, the Forth Green Freeport, and DFDS to identify what improvements are needed, the associated costs, and how it will be funded. It should also be noted that the Scottish Government has highlighted the need for an outline sanitary and phytosanitary agreement between the UK and EU.

The ferry, proposed by DFDS, could carry up to 80,000 passengers a year, boost the Scottish economy by Β£11.5 million, and take 8.2 million tonnes of freight off the roads whilst also opening up Scotland to new markets. Here at Fife Insider, we know it’s a popular idea locally, with over 90% of you saying in a recent poll that you would be interested in using the new ferry service to France if it’s introduced.

⛏️ Historic Coal Mining Artefacts Coming to Lochore Meadows

Lochore Meadows Country Park is set to get a fascinating new heritage display celebrating Fife’s rich coal mining past. As part of the Save the Cage project, a collection of historic mining artefacts will be installed beside the iconic Mary Pit Wheel, offering visitors a chance to explore the tools and machinery that shaped the lives of local miners and their families.

The exhibition will feature items loaned by the National Mining Museum Scotland, including a miner’s cage, man-riding bogies, roof supports, and coal-cutting machinery. These pieces trace a miner’s journey from the pithead to the coal face, giving a unique insight into the daily life and work underground.

The display is expected to be completed by mid-November, with an official opening to mark the occasion. The event will also celebrate the return of the historic Lochore Meadows train, a favourite sight for generations of visitors.
