TOP STORIES AROUND THE KINGDOM
๐ Elmwood College Campus Closure Confirmed
Scotlandโs Rural College has announced the permanent closure of the main building at Elmwood campus due to the deteriorating structural condition, which makes it financially unfeasible and unsafe to maintain. This follows a temporary decision last year to keep the west wing open to house the Animal Care unit for an additional academic year. Unfortunately, the situation has not improved.
This closure has sparked strong reactions from local politicians. Willie Rennie, MSP for North East Fife, criticised the decision as a โmassive blowโ to students and staff, arguing that demand for the course remains high and there are no other local alternatives for studying animal care. [SRUC]
โณ๏ธ St Andrews Links Trust Launches Drive Initiative to Widen Access to Golf

Playing the iconic Old Course in St Andrews is a bucket-list experience for golfers worldwide. However, this coveted opportunity comes at a steep price, with a round currently set at ยฃ340. This reflects a broader trend of Scotland's most famous courses becoming increasingly unaffordable for many players. To combat this, St Andrews Links Trust is offering Scots the chance to play on these legendary courses at a fraction of the cost, with rounds on the Old Course available for just ยฃ42.50.
Golfers must be residents of Scotland and cannot hold a current St Andrews Links Yearly Ticket to be eligible. A two-ball ballot will pair successful applicants, and families can apply for up to four golfers, with at least one child under 18. 716 tee times will be made available between May and October 2025. ๐ฟ Fifeโs International Film Festival Starts Today

For all the movie lovers out there, today marks the start of Sands 25, Fifeโs very own international film festival. Taking place at the Byre Theatre in St Andrews, this yearโs edition features a fantastic lineup of diverse events across the three-day programme.
From conversations with industry figures like Kharmel Cochrane, one of the UKโs leading casting directors, to screenings that spotlight homegrown talent, including Tornado, directed by Fifeโs own John Maclean, thereโs plenty to enjoy. Weโve listed some of our personal highlights below, but be sure to check out the full programme here.

๐ธBest Live Music Venues in Fife
Here at the Fife Insider, we often hear from fellow Fifers that they struggle to find live music to enjoy. While itโs true that the Kingdom canโt quite compete with the likes of Glasgow or even Edinburgh when it comes to venues, we still believe there are some fantastic gigs to be found right on your doorstep.
Sure, they might not always be the biggest names on the circuit, but you could easily stumble upon a future headliner playing an intimate show. Below are a few of our favourite spots โ and chances are, youโve seen them pop up in our weekly event listings.
PJ Molloys in Dunfermline might look like your typical pub, but step inside on a Friday or Saturday night and youโre likely to catch some brilliant rock and punk bands lighting up the stage.
Backstage at The Green Hotel in Kinross is possibly the busiest venue in Fife for live acts, offering an impressive mix of performances each week. With space for around 120 people, the venue leans slightly towards tribute bands but keeps the lineup varied and entertaining.
The Harbour Bar in Kirkcaldy is a more low-key spot, but no less worth your time. Every Friday and Saturday, youโll find a mix of acts performing, and the best part? Itโs usually free entry.
Alhambra in Dunfermline is a larger venue than most on this list, and although itโs maybe best known for its Christmas panto and comedy acts, it also books some top-tier bands. Just last week, Ocean Colour Scene took the stage!
The Shorgate in Crail is perfect for those after something a bit more relaxed and traditional. With session nights about twice a month, everyone is welcome to bring an instrument and join in or just sit at the bar and enjoy.
If you think weโve missed any must-visit spots, let us know โ weโd love to hear your suggestions!
