TOP STORIES AROUND THE KINGDOM
π Pavement Parking Ban Starts on Monday

Pavement parking bans have been sweeping across the UK, with the City of Edinburgh Council having introduced its own version of this policy back in 2023. Now, the long-awaited introduction of the pavement parking ban in Fife is set to begin imminently. The new rules will be in effect from Monday, September 1st and mean that you will no longer be able to:
Park on a Pavement β one wheel or more on the pavement could result in a fine.
Double Park β parking on the road adjacent to another vehicle could result in a fine.
Park at a Dropped Kerb β parking at dropped kerbs that provide crossing points for pedestrians could also result in a fine.
If you are found to be in breach of these new rules, then you could be subject to a Β£100 fine. This can be reduced to Β£50 if paid within 14 days. Some streets may be exempt from these new rules, and you can find the current list of those here. However, even in these cases, you must leave 1.5 metres of the pavement clear for pedestrians. LOCAL HEADLINES YOU NEED TO KNOW
πΊ Archaeologists have uncovered evidence that a field in Guardbridge, Fife, was used by humans for around 10,000 years, from the Late Upper Palaeolithic to the Bronze Age. Finds include Mesolithic hunter-gatherer camps, Neolithic farming pits, Bronze Age tools and sword moulds, and flints from 10,000β―BC.
π Fife Council has extended its Property Flood Resilience Grant, offering up to Β£5,000 per property from a Β£309k fund in 2025/26 to help homes and businesses install measures against rising flood risks.
β οΈ A 657-signature petition has forced Fife Council to review the speed limit at Strathkinness crossroads, a 20-year accident blackspot on the B939. Councillors are considering reducing the limit from 50mph to 40mph to improve safety.
ποΈ Fife College has launched Series 2 of its award-winning CampusCast podcast, giving listeners behind-the-scenes access to the new Dunfermline City Campus, set to open in October, and highlighting its sustainable, net-zero-ready design and the people shaping the project.
π¨ Young people from Auchmuty High School are transforming a vandalised Glenrothes underpass into a vibrant mural, POSITIVITUNNEL, with support from artists and local partners.
ποΈ Culross Abbey, an 808-year-old historic church in Fife, has been put on the market with offers over Β£35,000. The A-listed building could be repurposed for uses such as a museum, art gallery, educational facility, or day centre, subject to necessary consents.
π³ Scottish Forestry is offering free Farm Woodland Assessments in Fife and Stirling, helping farmers identify tree planting opportunities, potential income, and long-term woodland management options. The scheme supports climate forest initiatives and is free, with no obligation to proceed.
π΄ Rerouting the βscaryβ St Andrews to Guardbridge cycle path could cost Fife Council Β£2.4m and take up to 3 years. Plans involve a new 4m wide path over private land to meet safety standards, though negotiations with landowners and funding are still unresolved.
ποΈ Funding has been secured for new play areas in Star of Markinch (Β£140k) and Inverary Avenue, Glenrothes (Β£100k), with designs shaped by community consultations and work now moving to the tender stage.
ποΈ Dunfermline is set to continue growing with 1,400 new homes planned by Taylor Wimpey at their Whitefield development near Halbeath

π» Fife Home to Scotlandβs Best Beer Garden?

With such great weather over the summer, though the recent rain does suggest this may now be overβ¦, Iβm sure many of you, like us, will have spent some time enjoying some of the Kingdomβs great beer gardens. And maybe, just maybe, youβve visited the best one in Scotland without even knowing it!
At the Scottish Bar and Pub Awards, hosted in Glasgow on August 26th, it was revealed that Hugoβs Bar and Pavilion in Dalgety Bay had been named as being home to the best Beer Garden in the country! Away from beer gardens, Hugoβs wasnβt the only winner in Fife, with The Criterion in St Andrews receiving the Inverarity Morton Best Drinks Offering trophy.
I havenβt had the chance to visit either of these venues yet, but it sounds like the perfect excuse for a little βresearch.β Reply and let us know where you think Fifeβs best beer garden is. You can see the full list of the winners here.
