Good morning, Fifers! On Tuesday, we looked at Fife Council’s push to expand their on-demand bus service, GoFlexi, and asked if you’d tried it. While just 5% of you use it regularly, there’s clearly strong interest, with 72% saying that although they haven’t used it yet, they would like to give it a go

Here’s what's coming your way today:

LOCAL HEADLINES YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • 🎬 The British Film Institute’s Spotlight programme is partnering with OnFife to expand community cinema access across Fife and Clackmannanshire. The initiative aims to bring more independent screenings to underserved areas, provide training, skills development, and strategic funding, and create a sustainable, inclusive network of local film events over the next three years.

  • πŸ’› Weekly payments to foster and supported lodgings carers will rise by 3.5% to help recruit and retain carers. A Β£1,000 referral fee will be introduced for recommending new carers, and payment structures are being updated to support both new and continuing carers.

  • 🌳 Over 1,200 fruit trees have been planted across Fife as part of the annual A Fruit Tree for Every Garden in Fife campaign, run by Climate Action Fife. This spring, around 420 apple, pear, plum, and cherry trees were distributed at 12 community events. Residents can also add their trees to an online fruit tree map of Fife here. More free trees will be available in 2027.

  • πŸš— Lochore Meadows Country Park has added around 65 new parking spaces next to the main visitor centre, easing congestion during busy periods. The work was completed ahead of the Easter holidays, with further improvements planned before summer to enhance visitor access further.

  • 🎭 The Lang Toun Partners is launching the β€œKirkcaldy is…” campaign as part of its bid to become UK Town of Culture 2028. The initiative invites residents, schools, community groups, and creatives to share what makes the town special, shaping the cultural vision for the bid.

  • πŸšΆβ€β™€οΈ Fife Health Charity is encouraging everyone to take part in a walking or wheeling challenge this May to support health and wellbeing in Fife. Choose your distance, set up a fundraising page here, and let the charity know you’re participating. Every step counts toward a healthier, brighter future for the community.

  • 🌳 Over 600 native trees and 1,000 wildflower plugs were planted at Bervie’s Brae in Cowdenbeath thanks to Fife Council, Fife Coast and Countryside Trust, Woodland Trust Scotland, and local pupils from Lumphinnans Primary and Beath High.

TODAY’S TOP STORY

πŸ’Ό How Is Fife Helping People Find Work?

Fife Council has approved a Β£5.8 million employability support programme for 2026/27, aimed at helping residents access training, skills, and good-quality jobs across the Kingdom. The investment, endorsed by Cabinet Committee members this week, will fund programmes like EASYP, Positive Pathways, Fife Job Contract, Sector-Based Skills Academies, and the Turnaround programme, all offering tailored support for young people, adults, and families looking to enter or progress in the job market.

The funding split reflects a partnership approach, with 40% delivered by Fife Council's own Employability Service and 60% directed to third-sector organisations that provide specialist and community-based support. The approach has been shaped by local area priorities, input from people with lived experience, and alignment with wider strategies including Plan4Fife and the Fife Economic Strategy to ensure investment reaches the communities and individuals who need it most.

Services will continue from April 2026, with the Opportunities Fife Partnership providing strategic oversight to keep programmes responsive to community needs and focused on helping people into "fair and sustainable work."
